OBAMA: THE MAGIC NEGRO

(CNN) — A candidate for the Republican National Committee chairmanship said Friday the CD he sent committee members for Christmas — which included a song titled “Barack the Magic Negro” — was clearly intended as a joke.

The title of the song about President-elect Barack Obama was drawn from a Los Angeles Times column.

The title of the song about President-elect Barack Obama was drawn from a Los Angeles Times column.

“I think most people recognize political satire when they see it,” Tennessee Republican Chip Saltsman told CNN. “I think RNC members understand that.”

The song, set to the tune of “Puff the Magic Dragon,” was first played on conservative political commentator Rush Limbaugh’s radio show in 2007.

Its title was drawn from a Los Angeles Times column that suggested President-elect Barack Obama appealed to those who feel guilty about the nation’s history of mistreatment of African-Americans. Saltsman said the song, penned by his longtime friend Paul Shanklin, should be easily recognized as satire directed at the Times.

The CD sent to RNC members, first reported by The Hill on Friday, is titled “We Hate the USA” and also includes songs referencing former presidential candidate John Edwards and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, among other targets.

According to The Hill, other song titles, some of which were in bold font, were: “John Edwards’ Poverty Tour,” “Wright place, wrong pastor,” “Love Client #9,” “Ivory and Ebony” and “The Star Spanglish Banner.”

Saltsman was national campaign manager for former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s presidential bid in 2007 and 2008. Before that, he held a variety of posts, including a number of positions under former Sen. Bill Frist of Tennessee.

  1. Look, it may be satirical, but it is still in bad taste. Plus its a pretty lame political stocking stuffer. It’s “Christmas hits from politics”. it’s bullshit. We should talk about something else.

  2. WOW!!! NO SONG ABOUT BUSH AND THE MESS HE HAS CAUSED. NOW THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE APPROPRIATE TO SEND TO THE RNC. BUT THAT WOULD MEAN THAT HE WOULD BE MAKING FUN OF HIMSELF AND THE LOUSY JOB THEY DID OVER THE LAST EIGHT YEARS. BUT WAIT, THAT WOULD REQUIRE SOMEONE WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR. BUT THAT WOULDN’T BE SATIRE IT WOULD BE THE TRUE AND THE TRUE HURTS!! SO YES, HE IS THE MAGICAL NEGRO!! YAH!!! AND HE WILL BE YOUR PRESIDENT HOW’S THAT FOR SATIRE!!

  3. Tanya is so right The REAL Shame (sham) here is that the Republicans and their cronies don’t want the United States to do well if Democrats are in charge–all you have to do is listen to Rush or Hannity to see how they are already rippin an Administration that isn’t even in office yet. These sick-minded righties are not only dumb they are blind-as they won’t admit what a tragedy they caused at home and everywhere else on this planet–Grow up and get on board the “Magic Train”.

  4. Of course it was a joke. Hell Limbaugh was even joking about it when he first debuted it.

Plus a columinst from the LA Times came up with the “Magic Negro” phrase, Shanklin just ran with it.

  5. You say it’s just satire? Oh come on, guys! This song is an encapsulation of all the false statements that were made against Obama during the election. Could it be that deep down, this it what you really believe? But happily, you lost the election. Get over it and move on!

  6. It is never in good taste to poke fun at people’s ethnicity, religion, poverty, illness, etc. I’m bi-partisan and the Repubs are coming off like bigoted trashy Americans who have nothing else to make themselves feel superior, than put others down. How sad. They have not awaken to find that Americans are tired of this distasteful garbage. Repubs you are surely creating a firm base to turn-off even respectful republicans, democratics and independents alike. I hope you get it that we Americans don’t like this. It is discusting and shameful that the rest of the world is viewing Americans based on this sewage of yours.

  7. Yes, there is Political satire and then there is bad taste. However, disguising the GOP’s true feelings about Barack Obama in a ‘political satire’ song is EXTREMELY bad taste, but then we’re talking about conservative Christians who are Republicans. When will the conservatives get it? This is a progressive nation and finally we have a progressive leader in Obama, and for that I’m am completely proud. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY ENTIRE LIFE I am proud of America for soundly electing Barack Obama.

  8. it’s just a way to keep the hatrid and racism going for the Conservatives – because let’s face it – that’s all they have.

  9. The reminds me of the good ole times when we would sit around the fire singing “Gee whiz: the solstice hero” or “Bush: the master whitey” or “Allah hu Akbar Dragon” or “Mo the last true prophet” or “See ya, Alpha & Omega” – this all really happened once apon a time when we lived by the sea. As it turns out, there is no Snake in the grass. The rest of all of us don’t see one foot of your snake in the grass. The loophole for snake is being closed.

Newborns Nursery Little Tigers. Tale of the ring, the tigers eye, the return to love. He who holds the ring holds the power. The gift of love is to ring in love with the living. There is no snake in the grass. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Magic Man. Oh look there is a mother and child in need of care –

    • Mark,
You are a seriously disturbed man. I was at the Memorical Day ceremony in Boca raton at the cemetary today and you had a crazy sign up. It made no sense. This post makes no sense. You have a right to any political view, but you have no political view you are just a scattered, illogical kook. Go away.

  10. The song may be satirical but the topic is not, and this is just one of many irresponsible, idiotic messages that have been put out over the course of the last two years since the election began against Obama. I am bothered because I am a TRUE Christian and I know that the God I believe in does NOT support this type of ideology or behavior and the RNC and many Republicans in general put themselves on a moral high ground and think they are better than everyone else because they are Christian, yet they are behaving so opposite of what it is to be a Christian. The God I believe in is NOT the God that these people believe in because God doesn’t like ugly and people who send out messages like this and who say all these nasty things about Obama and his cabinet and the Americans who support him are VERY, VERY, VERY UGLY

  11. When will people realize that racist and bigoted remarks are hurtful.

Mr Saltsman is a public leader. He should be ashamed.

I’m sure the public would like to know what other bigoted view points he has.

  12. I appreciate legitimate satire even if I idenitfy with the topic being satirized. There is a thin line, however, between satire as a statement and satire as a cover for intolerance. The song titles listed in Ms. Sinderbrand’s article certainly suggest an underlying and personal theme on the part of Mr. Saltsman. Perhaps most disturbing is the CD title “We Hate the USA.” This strikes me more as a personal judgment than legitimate satire.

  13. “Barak the Magic Negro” Un freakin believable? The RNC still doesn’t get it. As long as these Bubba’s from the south, Sarah Palin, “Rush the Bigot”, etc. are the self proclaimed RNC base they are done winning significantly at the national level.

Lee Atwater’s southern strategy and politics of ridicule are viable options for success anymore. The rest of the country is weary from the last 16 years of the leadership style offered by the southern republicans.

Until the RNC begins putting forth the kind sensible leadership that can engage in real debate on the true republican value issues like less government, the rule of law, individual freedom granted by the constitutional and fiscal responsibility they’re done winning any relevant elected office outside of the deep south and a few low population states.

Electing Chip Saltsman to the RNC Chair won’t get an old fashioned northern republican like me back in the fold.

  14. Saltsman has disqualified himself from being considered as chairman of anything. Could this guy be representative of those in the RNC? You bet he can. Could they really be that bad? You bet they can.

My new year’s resolution is to call every Republican/conservative on their racist comments – every time – whether in public, or private – business gathering or leisure activity. We are better than this and this conduct is not to be tolerated.

Republicans – if you have constructive criticism – bring it forward; if you have constructive alternative suggestions, bring them forward. If you have hatred to spew – keep it to your small-minded selves. I don’t advocate it, but you risk a severe backlash.

  15. Come on!!!!!!!! Maybe it was intended only as a joke, but anyone with common sense knows this is offensive. What kind of a dork would send something like this at Christmas, and about a new President who hopefully will fix some of our problems. Gee, let’s add some fuel to the hate against negros fire! How completely stupid. We all need to GET ALONG. This action was so stupid it reminds me of something Palin would do.

  16. What CNN conveniently failed to mention is that the song based on the LA Times article and as played by Rush Limbaugh was recorded by Al Sharpton.

  17. the problem with it even as political satire is similar to the garbage spewed out during the campaign. if it information within is repeated enough, it begins to become true in the minds of the those that want to believe it. Even at face value of being a joke, it was stupid. Stupid on any political level.

  18. Maybe the far-right element of the Republican Party can split off and create a party of their own. They should call themselves the ENCLAVE and have John Henry Eden run as their Presidential candidate in 2012. The Republican “base” is as about as bright as your average FEV-infected Super Mutant anyway…

  19. The Real Issue is the racism within the so-called satire. That’s why the Republicans are not able to be an inclusive party. They do not have a diverse leadership and do not have diverse policies. Americans, this is a diverse society for all. The policies have to be inclusive especially for working class Americans which the Republican Administration abandoned. That’s why the middle class has a record layoff and foreclosure record that keeps going up!!!

Some say the reason for the layoffs is to get additional persons to become soldiers who will not have any options once unemployment runs out!!!

The Republican party is not for most Americans whether you voted Democrat or Republican….IT BEGINS WITH THE ECONOMY IN POLITICS!!!

  20. Aside from the fact that the “song” about our President Elect, Barack Obama is derisive, divisive and pure garbage coming from the mind of someone who wishes to turn the clock back to the days of exclusion, it is very dmaging to the “republican party”. It is time for republicans to make-up their minds if they want to be included in serving this country and come-up with solutions to the problems facing us or if they want to continue bathing themselves in mud.

  21. Only a loser from one of the welfare states of the deep south will put up and defend such a vile material.

Chip have demonstrated that he is are and always will be an immature, ignorant narcissistic fool.

No wonder he and his party have been marginalized and will continue to be marginalized.

Chip, aka McSame jr, should do himself a big favor and try not to smile and wipe off that ugly smock off his stupid face.

  22. Recent comments were posted on YouTube about this Jargon The Magic Nigro on December 27th 2008.
A video with our President Elect Barack Obama was presented. Several of these commentators stated that they didn’t think that this was racism. There were a few exceptions.

I Beg to differ on this subject of Not Being Racism.
There are some facts that way overdue for DISCUSSION.
ATTENTION These facts need to be received, swallowed, and digested:

    1)The Skin
    2)The Skin Color
    3)Stupid People
    4)Zip It
    5)Disrespect
    6)Sacrifice
    7)Ignorance

First of all, I believe people who do not understand what the skin is, need to consult their lexicons if they possess one.

The Skin consists of two layers; the Dermis and the Epidermis. One is inner; the Dermis which is the thick sensitive layer of skin or connective tissue beneath the epidermis that contains blood, lymph vssels, sweat glands, and nerve endings.

The other is the Epidermis which is the outer layer of skin: the thin outermost layer of the skin, itself made up of several layers, that covers and protects the underlying dermis. Do these layers have anything to do with what is inside the person?

“Does anyone in my audience of readers believe that the color of the skin was created for any significant reason?”

Do you believe that it is magic if you are Black, White, Yellow, or tan? The color of the skin was created for variety just like the color of the flowers. I wonder what this world would look like with only “RED ROSES”

I call people who pick out one nation, or one specific race of people and hate on them, “STUPID PEOPLE”. No! THIS is not an offence because these people lack common sense and intelligence.

Zip It! – silence should be the word. No race should have the right to dog another race. I believe it is high time for some people to come out of the RACISM HOLE. STOP!! Saying filth out of their mouths about the colors that God has created, and learn how to embrace color.

I embrace the Idea of a BLACK PRESIDENT in the WHITE House. BARACK OBAMA Is the man for the job at this appointed time. There is no need to sacrifice a
nation because of preferences. This all boils down to ignorance. I can’t believe that people would
stand behind color and preferences and would like to embrace discrimination. This is just too bad.

Gone are the days of shackles, handcuffs, dunces, ignorance, look down and not look up, and nooses are over. It is time for a reality check. Look up time – time to embrace differences in others.

  23. My name is Dani Atkins and I am one of 4 surviving children of Ronald Edward Atkins and Clancyna Marie Atkins. On January 26, 2008 my father was killed in a tragic car accident that took place only 2 minutes away from my home. My parents had been married for 30 years at the time of the accident without separation. As I have been assisting my mother with putting together various lawsuits and claims against several different persons, insurance companies, and even the Los Angeles Police Department regarding several acts of negligence and dishonor surrounding my fathers death, I have come across a disturbing piece of information that I, being a 24 year old African American person am appauled. My father having been born on April 9, 1955, has a birth certificate that identifies his color and race as being “NEGRO.” My grandmother, Eloise Marie Harrison having been born on April 4, 1933 has a birth certificate that identifies her color and race as being “NEGRO”. My mother, who is still alive, Clancyna Marie Atkins born on September 4, 1956 has a birth certificate that identifies her color and race as being “NEGRO” as well. And I am quite sure there are thousands if not milliions of other African American people dead or alive who have been identified on paper at birth as being “NEGRO” I am absolutely disgusted that the United States of America even in 2009 have not made an attempt to make right this defamation of character in administering all new birth certificates to those who have died as well as those still living to identify these HUMAN PEOPLE with dignity and respect. I am passionately committed to make my fathers name wholly reflect the honorable father, husband, and man that he was and the fact that his life was not even given an opportunity to start before he was branded on United States of America paper as being a “NEGRO” is a disgrace and a shame on America.
