Why Not to Marry Rich

Exotic vacations, fancy dinners, little boxes containing sparkly things…sure, dating a successful man has its perks. But if we’ve gleaned anything from watching Carrie and Big’s roller coaster romance, it’s that dating a rich dude comes with its share of headaches and heartaches. And the fact is, there are fewer rich guys to go around these days. That’s because more women than men are graduating from college, so they’re increasingly marrying guys with less education and income than they have themselves, according to a new report released by the Pew Research Center. Plus, fewer women than men have suffered job losses in the recession.

But there’s no reason to lament: “Guys with less cash can actually make women happier, because money and status often breed disloyalty and other negative traits in men,” says Adam Galinsky, Ph.D., a professor of management and organizations at Chicago’s Northwestern University. Here’s why you should give a guy with meager means a chance:

He’s More Likely to Be Faithful

When Tiger Woods apologized, he implied that he felt entitled by his success to have affairs. He’s not alone. Not only does research show that lower-income guys are less likely to stray, but scientists also found that wealthy men are hypocrites about cheating. “People in higher positions are more likely to cheat, yet they condemn others who do it because having money and power evokes entitled feelings,” says study author Galinsky.

He’ll Charm Your Friends

Low-and middle-income men are more polite than wealthy guys when they meet new people, reports the journal Psychological Science. When study authors watched rich and poor guys get acquainted with strangers, the less well-off men talked and laughed more and made more eye contact than the rich, who exhibited rude behavior such as fidgeting, doodling…even fixing their hair! “Men with less money try harder socially because making connections is a survival skill—and rich men may subconsciously believe they don’t need it,” says Dacher Keltner, Ph.D., author of Born to Be Good.

He’ll Champion Your Ambitions

Research published in the Journal of Applied Psychology says that successful men can be more sexist than their lesser-paid counterparts. This is likely because they’re usually alpha males who feel it’s a “man’s duty” to provide, says Beth Livingston, Ph.D., an assistant professor of human resources at Cornell University. Conversely, poorer men are often more supportive of their partners’ careers. “Couples who encourage each other to fulfill their professional dreams tend to be happier,” says Joshua Coleman, Ph.D., author of Marriage Makeover.

Sex Will Sizzle

A guy with lighter pockets will try to wow you in bed, says Bethany Marshall, Ph. D., author of Deal Breakers. “A man will use all of his resources to win a woman’s heart so she won’t leave. And if he can’t afford fancy dates, he’ll often aim to excel in the bedroom.” Shiny baubles for toe-curling sack sessions? We’d call that a fair trad

  1. These days, MANY desi guys my friends and I meet have good money, are educated and well-traveled. What they need to change are their attitudes! Sorry to say, but (at least for this Bangladeshi-American), it’s hard to find the right guy!

  2. I am a very wealthy woman who is under massive social pressure to date UP in a man. Those men I have found that are not in their 50s are married, arrogant or can not deal with my own success and financial security.

My boyfriend who makes significantly less (musician) however holds 2 full time jobs is loving, passionate, spends good quality time with me without their being a competition on who owns more or dominated with business related conversations.

Balance is key – as long as he continues to strive to be better, continues to rise in self actualization and contributes in whatever form he can financially it is great.

And the bedroom part is 110% true.
