“BIRD SONG” An Original Poem by Suheir Hammad

GOATMILK is proud to to publish internationally renowned poet Suheir Hammad’s  new piece, “Bird Song,” which she wrote for Ramadan.

bird song

back to black

back to life

back to regality

all lush like gloss so glamour rust

slow motion fast life nothing is bust its seams

come undone often

quest a vision switch see the stitch in people

what they hold corner tripping secrets waiting

coming brings river

channel a crossing a dam dress in spectrum

drossed in dust a salt a key holder not a keeper

hoopoe come here

cooo cooo crown

escape the form

  1. I like the verse, “quest a vision switch see the stitch in people.” There’s internal rhyme between “switch” and “stitch.” Also, “quest a vision” evokes “vision quest,” the Native American rite of passage though the change in word order makes it more active.

  2. Too cryptic for my taste.

I generally distrust forms of art that place 99% of the fruition effort on the spectator, and 1% on the artist.

“It’s what you make of it – it gives different messages to different people”, the artists will tell you.

Sorry: in that case, maybe I am the artist – aren’t I? But they get the money and the glory 🙂

  3. I Love this piece – Thank you for writing.
pay attention to what you love instead of hating on others.
Birds flying here, singing songs of divinity, spreading light. – infinite Peace / Salām
